Don't Shop, Adopt your next kitten or cat.
Have you ever wondered where pet shops get all those cute little puppies and kittens? The answer is from puppy and kitten mills.
Definition of a puppy or kitten mill Puppy and kitten mills are commercial kennels that mass produce dogs and cats in squalid, overcrowded cages, without proper veterinary care, shelter from heat or cold, and adequate food and water. Animals bred in these facilities are forced to breed heat cycle after heat cycle often leading to severe reproductive disease and illness. Substandard care and attention are given to these animals since puppy and kitten mill owners care more about profit than the health of the animals.
While almost no one would knowingly support this type of inhumane treatment of animals, many do so each year by buying a "product." Puppy and kitten milling is a multimillion-dollar business and one fact that many people do not realize about these pet-store cuties is that at least 90% of them are a product of these mass production farms. So if you buy from a pet store you support the mill.
What you can do to end to the suffering There are many things you can do to help stop the puppy and kitten mill practice, The number one thing to remember is DO NOT BUY THAT PUPPY OR KITTEN IN THE WINDOW! It’s difficult to pass up, but as long as there is a market for these animals then they will continue to be produced in the same fashion as they are now. Pet stores generally rely on impulse buys to sell their animals. Like all businesses, the “product” will only be produced to meet demand. When you buy a pet from a pet store you may think you are saving a life but in actuality you are condoning the mother to have one more litter in “concentration camp” type conditions.
Alternatives to Pet Shops Go to your local shelter. There are 10-20 million dogs and cats killed in shelters each year. These are great animals that deserve homes. Adopting from a rescue is very rewarding and you would get the same thing you would get from buying at a pet shop. Looking for a Purebred and think you can’t find one in a shelter? Think again. Research has shown that 25-30% of animals in shelters are purebreds. There are endless dogs and cats in shelters that are in need of a loving home. Remember when you adopt, you are truly saving a life. |
